Reflections for Parade on 22nd JanuaryOn 22nd of January, we had Physical Training, Revision of Lamp Lighting (Hurricane Lamp) and Baton drills.
In the beginning of the parade, CI Ma’am Yolanda took us for Roll Call and Inspection as Nike Ma’ams were sitting for a test. We also did some drills but we were not up to standard at all. We forgot our drills like ‘Keluar Baris’ and ‘Besurai’. We also did not answer a question and Ma’ams had to ask twice before we answered.
After that, it was learning of baton drills. We learnt how to do ‘Sedia’, ‘Senang Diri’ and ‘Hormat’ with the baton. Our movements were not sharp enough and we did not follow the timing. Our bangings were also not coordinated. However, it got better after we practised more. We changed to PT Kit after that for Physical Training. We exceeded counts and we were very disappointed in ourselves. One of us also dropped our skirt and it was confiscated.
After baton drills, it was physical training. We played Captain Ball with Ma’am Izzah, Ma’am Sonya, Ma’am Eveline and Ma’am Kashmira. We had a great time playing but then we realised that we did not do warm up first. After cooling down, we had Revision of Lamp Lighting (Hurricane Lamp).
For Revision of Lamp Lighting (Hurricane Lamp), our Ma’ams spilt us into four groups and asked us to draw out the Hurricane Lamp and label out the parts on a piece of paper and if we got most of it correct, we would be able to claim back our skirt. We drew most of them correctly and managed to claim back our skirt. Although all of us read the Campcraft Manual, we were still quite unsure when Ma’ams asked us questions about the Hurricane Lamp. We will make sure that we will read the Campcraft Manual more thoroughly next time.
In conclusion, we think that we are not up to standard and we should work harder and be a good role model to the Secondary Ones who are coming next week. We will try to change faster and not get our uniforms confiscated. We will also try to do well in both drills and Campcraft.

Unit Outing 2009 Part 2
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 @ 4:43 AM
This unit outing is the first one we have ever attended. We think that the unit outing was generally fun and interesting. The games we played we innovative and creative. We could see the effort put in into the games by the organisers to make it the unit outing a successful one. We feel that teamwork was extremely important during the games. However, it would have been better if everyone could be more enthusiatic during the games.
During dinner, each squad just stayed with their own squadmates so there wasn't much bonding that time.
Overall, the whole unit only bonded a little during the games. We had a fun and memorable time during the outing. We look forward to more of such activities.

Unit Outing 2009
Wednesday, December 30, 2009 @ 5:02 AM
On 28 December we had our first unit outing in Cedar NPCC history. It was really fun and it bonded us a lot. Before we went to Ma’am Ying Xin’s house, most of us decided to meet at Compass Point and we ate our lunch together before making our way to Ma’am Ying Xin’s house.
When we reached, Melissa and Germine went to meet Sharon and Joycelyn to help blow up balloons and fill up the water balloons. The rest of us waited at the bus stop before deciding to wait at the main gate. After Ma’ams arrived, we helped to carry the inflated balloons to the function room. After everything was ready, we played the games organised by Phoenix Ma’ams first. We played games such as charades, treasure hunt and AEIOU. Each of us had a game we felt that were the most interesting. Most of the games involved teamwork between the teammates.
At 6pm, we continued with Aether’s games. However, not everyone managed to play the remaining games as they had to help barbeque the food. They were really upset that they couldn’t play the games. The first game we played was the balloon wheel. We had to form a circle and place our hands around each others’ neck. Then we had to place the balloon between our heads and try to balance it until the other side of the room. Melissa, Sharon, Joycelyn and Germine tried to demonstrate and it seemed very difficult. However, they soon got the hang of it and they told the rest of us how to play. Then it was the balloon war! We had to snatch balloons from others or guard it against the ‘snatchers’. It was really fun trying to snatch and protect the balloons from the other groups. Many of us tried snatching balloons from our ma’ams and had a lot of fun trying to do so. We felt that it was the best game throughout the unit outing. Anyone could tell that everyone enjoyed themselves judging by the noise made.
The last game was water balloon! We decided to try to persuade ma’ams to join in the game as we did not warn them earlier about having water games. We had to allow them to throw the water balloons at us but we are not allowed to throw at them. In the end, all of Aether got wet. But we still had a lot of fun playing it.
After all the games were played, we proceeded to the function room to rest. Soon our dinner was ready and we began eating. We did not eat much and there were a lot of leftovers.
There were no more programmes planned for us and we decided to entertain ourselves by playing with each other and the balloons. Germine and Meita appeared to be ‘drunk’ and they were only drinking syrup water. Melissa and Qianwei also entertained us by having a conversation in a high pitched voice. We had a fun time laughing at each other.
As there were a lot of time left, everyone went to play at the playground. We had lots of fun there playing with the swings, merry go round and the standing see-saw. Many of us fell off the merry go round and few just flew off the swing. We took turns pushing the merry go round. We spent our time there laughing and screaming. We think we scared the children there. In the end, all of us squeezed into the merry go round and sang some campfire cheers. We all think that it was the best time during the whole unit outing and it was the activity that bonded us the most.
After playing at the playground, we went back to help with the packing and clean up. We were asked to deal with the balloons that we had a hard time blowing up. Many of us were unwilling to bring the balloons home and we had to pop them. We feel that it was quite fun popping balloons too. Amirah, Joycelyn, Qianwei, Hengyee and some others helped to mop and sweep the floor. We also helped to finish up the sandwiches.
After everything was cleared, we went down to the barbeque pit to take photo as a squad and as a unit.
In a nutshell, we all feel that this unit outing was a success and we enjoyed ourselves a lot. We hope that there will be another unit outing next year.

Adventure Training Camp 2009
Tuesday, September 15, 2009 @ 7:23 PM
ATCThe Adventure Training Camp (ATC) is a training camp held once every year to let the secondary two cadets from different schools to come together to interact and put what they had learnt to test and to further sharpen their skills that they have learnt from NPCC. All secondary two cadets from all schools are suppose to attend this three day two night camp prepared for them by their Cadet Inspector (CI).
For this year Area 5 ATC, it was held from 22nd May to 24th May. The secondary two cadets attending this camp were quite nervous before the start of it as it was their first time attending to an area camp, where we will be meeting cadets from other schools. Everyone was trying to go through all the Do's and Don'ts during the bus ride to the jetty. After the short boat ride to Pulau Ubin, all the cadets have to fall in to wait for further instruction, before trekking to their campsite.
Upon reaching the campsite, the whole squad was separated into eight different groups, and the eight groups also compromised of the other cadets from other schools. And soon we were tested on our first skill of the day, team spirit and co-operation amongst group members, when we were supposed to pitch a tent that we were going to stay in during the two nights of the camp. We had to work with people we have never worked with before and this was quite challenging for us as we were so used to working with our own squadmates.
After tent pitching, we had to go for other activities like low elements, kayaking and many other fun activities which was meant for us to bond with our groupmates and learn to take the lead. The theme for the campfire was breaking boundaries and we were given one time at the end of the day to sit together to think of an item to present at the campfire the following night. We learnt how to tolerate and accept each other through our brainstorming together and came up with a performance. It really bonded us as a group as we got to know each and everyone better.
The following night, the secondary two and three cadets gathered together at the secondary three campsite to cheer together and see each others’ performances. The top 3 performances were chosen and given recognition. We truly enjoyed ourselves as we cheered through the night.
At the end of the ATC, we were very relieved to be reunited with our squadmates. The past few days had been very productive and we had learnt a lot and made several new friends as well. But this was nothing compared to being with our own squadmates. We proceeded on to trek down to the jetty, where the boat leading to home was, while cheering continuously throughout. We were all very relieved to get back with the unit, especially our squadmates and to see all those familiar faces again even though we were a little reluctant to leave the camp and our new friends.
Through the whole of ATC, we have learnt many valuable lessons and skills which will benefit us greatly. We learnt to have a sense of urgency at all times to be able to do things efficiently and to always maintain a good standard regardless of what we are doing. We also realized that everyone does not work alone. Instead, we have to have teamwork to succeed together when given a task to complete. We should always persevere to complete it even if we are having a difficult time. The new friends from other schools would be able to help us adapt to our surroundings so we should never criticize others or look down upon them. We should always cooperate with them and lead when asked for volunteers. Lastly, we would like to say that this experience has been great and unforgettable. It was certainly an adventure and it was different from our own AC as we get to interact with cadets from other schools as well as we can exchange the knowledge we have gained.

National Day is a joyous occasion celebrated on 9th August yearly by all Singaporeans to mark Singapore’s nationhood. Schools also celebrate the special occasion by putting up various performances relating to Singapore’s success as a thriving independent country over the years. Every year, in Secondary Schools, the uniform groups would first start with the National Day Parade. The National Day Parade contains 4 contingents of the different uniform groups, NPCC, NCC, RCY and Girl Guides. The uniform groups, NCC and NPCC, will take alternate years to be the Guard of Honour Contingent. This year, NPCC was the Guard of Honour Contingent. The whole parade was led by Sergeant Zunairah Seron, the parade commander, from NPCC.
Cedar NPCC unit have been doing extremely well and has sustained the Gold award for the Unit Overall Proficiency for the past eight years. Every cadet trained very hard for two weeks to ensure a perfect National Day Parade. The trainings were held twice weekly where all the contingents would have to pay careful attention to the commands given and continue with their drills as sharp and precise as possible in sync with the concert band’s rhythm. It was not very easy as all the drills had to be done by the time the concert band stops playing. We had to move even faster and at the same time coordinate our movements.
With a short period of time to train, cadets involved in the parade had to attend extra training sessions so as to ensure a high standard performance on the actual day. Everyone put in a great amount of effort and persevered and endured through the tiring and tough practices. Everyone cooperated with each other and did their drills with much involvement and perfection. When sometimes a few drills did not turn as well as we expected, we practiced more on them.
On the real day, we did our drills with great amount of effort and pride. Although we had minor mistakes we managed to carry on with the parade as perfect and precise as possible. Our hardwork did pay off. We had a sense of accomplishment after the parade was over.
From this experience, we have learnt that cooperation, perseverance, endurance and being alert is important in order for a contingent and a squad to do well. With such values, definitely a squad would be able to do well in everything they do in their NPCC life.
